Nueroscience Behind Dysregulated Children


​Have you ever asked a dysregulated child to "just calm down," only to watch their meltdown intensify? You are only doing the best you can with the limited knowledge you may have—but it’s actually basic neuroscience!


​Here is something most parents and educators were never taught: children cannot self-regulate until they have experienced co-regulation.

According to Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, a child’s brain continuously performs an automatic safety check called neuroception. Before a child can listen, reason, or learn, their nervous system must detect subtle safety cues in your voice, facial expressions, and calm posture.


​When a child enters fight, flight, or freeze, the prefrontal cortex—the brain’s center for logic and problem-solving—literally goes offline. Yelling or lecturing a dysregulated child is like trying to install software while the computer is turned off!


How We Shift the State

​When we teach children nervous system awareness, we give them the ability to track their internal engine:

  • Recognizing the shift: Noticing a racing heart or tight hands before the breakdown happens.

  • Borrowing calm: Utilizing somatic grounding, rhythmic breathwork, and movement to signal safety directly to the vagus nerve.
